County Clerk

Our Office and Mission

The County Clerk ’s office is an office that touches everyone’s life and has since 1848.  We keep and maintain Birth Certificates, Death Certificates, Marriage licenses and Assumed Name Certificates.  The office also records every real estate and land transaction.  In addition, we file and maintain the records of the Commissioners' Court, two County Courts at Law and the courts for Probate, Mental Illness, and Juvenile cases.  An efficient, well run office is vital to the citizen’s of Kaufman County and the court.

The County Clerk must be a seasoned administrator with expertise in the areas of strategic planning, case flow management, information systems management, records management, human resource management, program evaluation, financial management and public relations.

We strive to use teamwork, technology and planning to improve our services, increase the accessibility of the records, and prioritize preservation efforts. Since 2000, by focusing on our goals, we are able to tout many firsts, have a long list of accomplishments and have received several awards.

Citizens Beware of Collections Phone Scam

A new telephone scam has hit Kaufman County and Laura Hughes, the County Clerk wants to spread the word fast to ensure residents are not fooled by it.

The scam involves someone calling and identifying themselves as an investigator with the Kaufman County Clerk. The investigator states that the caller has defaulted on a loan and to avoid further fees or arrest, they must pay by credit card over the phone, immediately.

When questioned about a callback number the investigator refuses to give any additional information and the phones calling all have blocked phone numbers.

The County Clerk's office is responsible for collections; however this is not, nor ever would be, the way this office handles collections issues, according to Hughes.

The Better Business Bureau offers the following tips to avoid being taken by a debt collection scam:

1. Ask the debt collector to provide official documentation which substantiates the debt.

2. Do not provide or confirm any bank account, credit card or other personal information over the phone until you have confirmed the legitimacy of the call.

3. File a complaint with the Federal TradeCommission online if the caller is abusive, uses threats or otherwise violates federal telemarketing laws.

4. Confirm any debt a debt collector claims you owe. Be sure there is an outstanding balance and try to pay the business you owe directly before dealing with a debt collection agency.

If you receive a call and have any questions contact the Kaufman County Clerk's office immediately at 972-932-4331 X 1101 or your local law enforcement agency.
